How to Determine the Right Keywords for your Content Marketing Efforts

Keywords have been one of the biggest driving factors in the growth of the Internet over the past ten years. Researching and using the correct keywords in your firm’s website content and blog postings can make all the difference in where your website appears in the search engines. In order to use keywords to optimize your search results, you must first focus on the keyword selection process. An important point to remember when selecting your keywords is not to over think the process. A keyword is simply what you or a potential client would type in to search for a service. No more, no less. A good rule of thumb is to think, “What legal services do we offer?” The answer should tell you the best keywords to focus on.

There are times when you need to be careful not to use keywords that are too general. For example, if you are a family law attorney, you might want to shy away from using the keyword ‘divorce.’ Instead, you may want to include your geographic location and the word ‘lawyer’ to the keyword, i.e. – ‘Orlando Divorce Lawyer.’ If you simply use the keyword ‘divorce,’ your competition for search results is going to be overwhelming and sites that are more authoritative will knock you out of the results. If you specify your keywords, you are more likely to generate a return on your keyword usage. Another way you can find good keywords is by monitoring social media conversations. For example, search a term on Twitter and see how active it is. You can also use Google Adwords to monitor how many times a term or keyword phrase is searched.

Once you have chosen the best keyword or keyword phrases to use, you must take into consideration that repetition is extremely important to Google. Include your keywords in every piece of content you publish as many times as appropriate, without sounding too repetitive. It is also beneficial to try and use the keyword in the title of your content piece or within the first 100 words of your content.
